My No.1 bike out of the 3 is a bit special. In fact, a lot special. Firstly, all the aluminium has been professionally polished. The front brake caliper is a 4-pot factory unit in gold, manufactured by 'Braking'. The engine has been modified by top engine-tuning ace Stan Stephens. Stan has bored it out to 275cc, ported and tuned it, 1mm has been skimmed of the flywheel's circumference, factory carbon-fibre fork protectors have been fitted, Jason Finn-engraved aluminium billet fork yokes replace the standard units adding up to a very special and unique machine.

Bike No 2 is completely standard. This is the bike that I do all my stunt shows on. On this bike I use the single-pot brake calipers on the back and the front as these calipers use deeper brake pads giving me more surface area contact on the discs. This prevents the brakes from over-heating so quick during shows. The twin pots are brilliant for trials but for the shows they get too hot too quick. I also have a bracket under the rear mudguard to prevent it bending when doing stunts. I run this bike with more oil because I keep the throttle open at high revs for longer than I do for trials where only quick bursts are used. The extra oil prevents it from seizing....Imagine at a 50mph wheelie with me standing on the mudguard...... Ouch! I won't divulge any more important things about my stunt bike but everything is standard apart from the bracket under the seat.

Bike No.3 is the one I call my 'Donut/practice' bike. I use this bike in shows for 'Donuts' and 'Get-Ons'. This is also the bike I practise on - not stunts but sections and general riding.

Why I Chose Montesa.

Many riders choose the best deal and not the best bike. For me the best bike is an absolute must and that comes in the shape of the Honda-Montesa Cota, 315R. Yeah, it's always possible to get a better financial deal elsewhere but why compromise on quality and reliability for the sake of a few more sponsored pennies? Besides, the Montesa enables me to complete hundreds of shows with no trouble whatsoever and this is essential for all the promoters that I work with. Who wants to employ a rider if his bike keeps going wrong? They don't, quite frankly. Saying: " Sorry!" over the microphone to 15,000 people for a bike that's fallen apart is not a very professional thing to engage in. For me, reliability and consistency are worth more than a one-off fat cheque any day of the week. ( Unless I can retire on it ha!)

Martin and Caroline at Sandifords, the official Montesa importer, have been fantastic since they began their sponsorship with me back in 1998. Like the bikes they have never let me down in providing me with all my needs as a professional freestyler and I like to think that I will end my riding career still using the Montesa. In a nutshell they are second to none.
